Playing time FAQ

How much playing time should each youth soccer player get?

Divide total game minutes multiplied by players on the field by your roster size. In a 60-minute 9v9 game with 12 players, each player gets 45 minutes (75% of the game) under an equal rotation.

How do I meet a 50% minimum playing time rule?

Equal rotation meets a half-game minimum whenever your roster is no more than twice the number of players on the field: 14 for 7v7, 18 for 9v9, 22 for 11v11. Above that, equal shares fall below 50%.

How many players should I roster for 7v7, 9v9 and 11v11?

A common guide is 3 to 4 substitutes: 10-11 players for 7v7, 12-13 for 9v9, and 14-16 for 11v11. Fewer subs means more minutes per player; more subs protects you on no-show days.

How often should I substitute in youth soccer?

A simple equal-time scheme is to split the game into as many equal segments as you have players and swap your longest-on-field players each segment. Many coaches round this to sub windows every quarter or at set minute marks.
